glow, manifold, glow!!! (2.5L)

why is it that when my timing is at 18* the exhaust man. is fine, and the engine runs great, but when the timing is at 8* (factory spec) the manifold glows and the engine rides rougher?

Are the exhaust manifolds supposed to glow at any time? I was out in the dark and after 3-4 minutes afer i started my car the manifolds started glowing. i would rev it up to about 2k on the tach and they would get even more red. i am doubting this is normal but I thought since it being nighttime...
